Recently I bought the Titleist AP1 712 Irons with the Aldila 75 gram graphite shaft. First of all, I'd like to tell you the apperance. The club looks beautiful and in the address position, the top line does not appear too thick and off set is moderate. I was immediately able to get more height and at least a half a club more distance and found the club easier to swing than my previous irons. It should owe to the lighter graphite shaft, a lower flex point, and weighting in the head. I had played Hogan Apex Plus irons and then Taylor Made R7 (both great irons!) but was able to achieve a higher and slightly longer ball flight with the titleist ap1.
I know that not everyone may want the higher flight but I found I was losing swing speed and carry the last few years and needed the help these new clubs provide. A higher flex point in the shaft can produce a somewhat more penetrating flight. I don't work the ball a lot but have found these relatively easy to fade and a bit harder to turn over which was surprising since I generally hit right to left. On the other hand, it is Nov. in the Northeast and my game is not at its peak. The ap1, a great iron for those who want to combine a relatively traditional, look with a lot of technology. While I wouldn't say these are game improvement irons, ap1 irons are much easier for me to hit high and with good distance than the my previous iron and steel shaft combination. Finally, get fit or try different shaft-head combinations, which Titleist's fitting system allows you to do.
